PHP is a widely-used server-side scripting language developed initially for web development to create dynamic web pages. It was one of the first server-side scripting languages that could be embedded directly into HTML files, rather than requiring external file calls for data processing. PHP code is interpreted by a web server with a PHP processor module to generate the final web page. Over time, PHP has expanded to support command-line interfaces and can be utilized in standalone graphical applications. It can operate on most web servers as well as function independently on almost every operating system platform at no cost. PHP competes with Microsoft's Active Server Pages (ASP) server-side script engine alongside similar languages and has been installed on over 20 million websites and one million web servers globally. Developed by Rasmus Lerdorf in 1995, PHP is currently maintained by The PHP Group and serves as the official reference for the language. It is licensed as free software under the PHP License which does not align with the GNU General Public License (GPL) due to certain term usage limitations. Initially standing for "Personal Home Page", PHP's meaning was later revised to a recursive acronym - "PHP: Hypertext Preprocessor". The genesis of PHP dates back to 1994 when Rasmus Lerdorf created a collection of Perl scripts known as "Personal Home Page Tools" to manage his personal website. The scripts handled functions such as displaying his resume and tracking website traffic. Lerdorf transformed these scripts into C programming language Common Gateway Interface (CGI) binaries, expanding their capabilities to work with web forms, database communication, leading to the creation of "Personal Home Page/Forms Interpreter" or PHP/FI. Released publicly as "Personal Home Page Tools (PHP Tools) version 1.0" on June 8, 1995, this iteration laid the foundation for today's PHP functionality encompassing Perl-style variables, form management, and HTML embedding. Despite its similarities to Perl, the syntax was more straightforward but less consistent.

A development team evolved from this initial release, ultimately debuting PHP/FI 2 after extensive testing in November 1997.
